Homemade birdie cakes!

I haven't been blogging at all lately.  Not looking, not posting!  I have been insanely busy!  But I am vowing to do so at least once a week now; with posts about what we here at Wiggles and Giggles Home Day Care have been up to!

This weeks ideas and activities are based all around birds!  We made bird cakes! :)  I saw this post over here and thought that it would make a great learning experience for my littles!  Motor skills, sensory skills, listening skills, cause and affect, and science!!

So to start we saved our plastic cups from our peaches......it made the perfect size and shape!
I used a screw and punched 2 holes in the bottom of the cup

I glued 2 wooden kabob skewers together to make an X -this will be the perch

I threaded our yarn through the bottom of the cup (from the outside to the inside) down around the underside of the skewers (so the yarn holds the skewers in place) and up through the second hole from the inside of the cup to the outside.

While I worked on getting the perchs' ready - the kids mixed up their bird seed mixture.  I put it in zipper bags and had them squeeze to mix it well.  They found plenty of other ways to get the job done.  A couple of them even squished it flat with their bellys!

After all was mixed well - the kids got to get gooey!!  They dug in and filled their fruit cups to the top.

Once the cups were packed well,  I popped them in the freezer to speed up the hardening process.  About an hour later, I removed them from the cups and hung them up for the birds!

GIANT littles

One day a couple of weeks ago we had a no school day here.  So I had a bigger little than usual.  So during nap time to keep him busy (and quiet) here's what we came up with.

I had gotten a package shipped in the mail and it was stuffed with a long sheet of brown paper(all crinkled up but still usuable!)

We cut a piece long enough for each child.  They laid on the table while I traced around them.  Then they spent the afternoon re-creating themselves!  In GIANT size!!!  It kept them busy that's for sure!

He wasn't real sure about laying on the table!!

This guy worked on his for over 2 hours!!!

Genius.....

We are talking triangles in our daycare this week.  I was thinking how could I make some snack or meal~  so we have quesadilla's cut in triangles.  But that is not what is exciting me!!!  I have one of those old time grilled cheese sandwich makers.  The kind that seals the sandwich into 2 triangles!  So I was getting fancy.  Here's what I came up with......

See I told you my sandwich maker was old!!!  In this photo, I ran out of pancake batter so the sausages are sticking out!  In the others there were completely hidden!  SURPRISE!!!!!

And here are my littles enjoying their pancake triangles, banana, and milk!

LOVE

I saw this and immediately fell in love!!!  However when I got here I didn't love the price!!! Right away I thought "I can do that!!"  So I set off to make my own variation.

I had a painter's canvas in the craft closet, I measured it up, chose my fabric and measured and cut it to fit.  I added an inch and a half so I could wrap it around to the back.  I sewed the color blocks together and ironed.

I found a nice font on the computer and printed it out the size I wanted.  Cut around each letter and traced them onto the fabric.  Then I sewed on my buttons!!  When I was done I sprayed the canvas with spray adhesive and lined up the center of my fabric, smoothed out all the bubbles and pulled it tight around the back.  I used the heavy duty stapler to attach the fabric to the back!!

TADA!!!  for just a couple of bucks for the canvas I have some pretty new bedroom art!

Sign Design

As most of you know - I run my own in home day care.  I have had the opportunity to stay home with my 2 little boys since they were born 4 years ago!  I was given a handpainted sign by a coworker at the bank I resigned from to open up my day care!  But I needed a new one.  The weather wasn't very nice to the first one!!!

So I took one of my business cards and tried to paint a replica!!!  I think it turned out pretty close!!  I did add tiny little humans and some pets of course!!  I love stick people!!

The sign is hanging on the side of my house right under our house numbers.  I think aqua is my new fav color!!  What do you think?  Pretty close hey?

THEN......

I saw this really cool subway art on pinterest.  But I am way to cheap to purchase anything of the like.  So I put something similar together myself.  I used some of my photo editing software, and put together some of my family rules.  Had the photo printed out to an 8X10.  Painted a canvas in rainbow colors, and mod podged the photo to the canvas.  The only thing I don't care for is that I should have used matte finish mod podge.  I  may have to go back and fix it.  I think it is a bit too shiny!  Then I added bright orange ribbon around the outer edge!

Happy Crafting!
